Hmmm...a topic, eh?

So...supposedly I am supposed to pick a topic for a blog. What an original idea! Nobody wants to hear me just ramble on about how the garbage guys didn't pick up my yard waste yet again this morning? I am shocked and dismayed.

I guess loosely this is about me trying to get Independence for the work-a-day world and do my own thing. The general gist will be the method in which I do this. But also in this blog I hope to cover some other topics that interest me as well: business, technology, money, and spirituality. On occasion I also hope to throw in some general geek-culture, too.

So in general, in order to escape the matrix, I will need to cover my current salary and benefits from my current day job. I estimate that to be worth about $80,000 per year or about $6500 per month.

Yikes!

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Another additional goal is to go out and be on Buzz Out Loud and meet some of the folks whose podcast I watch daily. I already talk to them on the computer screen. It would be nice for them to talk back once in a while. :)

Please feel free to follow me on this journey and see how I progress. You can follow me on this blog using the link on the left.

One other tidbit I learned today and I need to get started on is to get my own domain name and host. So this blog will be moving soon....

Later.

First post

This blog will be dedicated to the pursuit of escaping "the Matrix." The Matrix, as I define it, is the "trap" of sorts I have found myself in working a 9-5 job that, while I enjoy certain aspects of, I no longer feel is conducive to my long-term happiness.

It is more than just job dissatisfaction. It is a realization that, since I am only assured a short time on this earth, I need to make the most of it. Answering help desk calls that can usually be answered with the phrase "reboot" is no longer filling the bill.

So this blog is a truly a journal of my journey to this escape. My goals of this blog are as follows:

  1. To maintain the blog to track my progress.
  2. To maintain focus on the goals
  3. To help define the goals.
  4. To get help from others where and when possible.
Currently, I am defining "escaping the matrix" as follows:

  1. Working independently "for myself" as I want when I want.
  2. Financial Independence and freedom.
  3. Freedom to pursue my interest.
  4. I realize these my not be the most specific goals right now, but I hope to refine them over time.

A few ideas I have to achieve these goals right now are to become an Apple developer and writing this blog. Yup. That's it. Not much to start with, but it's something. Worst part is I don't even know how to code yet.

The first things I am going to try to do (or my first "mini-goals") are :

  1. Read Zen Habits (http://zenhabits.net/) daily

  2. Read Four Hour Work Week Blog (http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/) daily

  3. Do 1/2 hour daily research on how to improve this blog.

  4. Do 1/2 hour daily learning Apple development

  5. Blog on this blog daily.

And so it begins. Wish me luck.
